El trabajo aborda la figura del artista del antiguo Egipto, a menudo considerada casi imperceptible o no inexistente para algunos estudiosos. Sin embargo el autor demuestra que es posible identificar la identidad social de estos pintores,  su organización, modos de trabajo, e incluso sus propias individualidades, estudiando la decoración de las tumbas privadas de la Necrópolis de Tebas durante la dinastía XVIII, .
